Pregnancy And Webster Technique

Chiropractic care during pregnancy is not only safe, it’s essential. We specialize in pregnancy care and have extensive experience with addressing all of the stages of pregnancy and post partum. It is important to see a chiropractor during pregnancy because during pregnancy, there are several physiological and endocrinological changes that occur in preparation for creating the environment for the developing baby. During pregnancy the following changes occur to a woman’s body: protruding abdomen and increased back curve, pelvic changes and postural adaptations. These can contribute to misalignments in the spinal column or joints.

Chiropractic adjustments can foster optimal alignment of the pelvis which can affect the mother’s ability to have a natural non invasive birth and can provide for a shorter, easier delivery. When needed we can utilize specific chiropractic adjustments which address misalignments of the pelvis.   This type of misalignment is often seen in breech and posterior positions. With a properly aligned spine and balanced pelvis, babies have a greater chance of moving into the correct position for birth and may avoid a breech or posterior presentation.

The late Larry Webster, D.C., Founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), developed a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment which enables chiropractors to establish balance in the pregnant woman’s pelvis and reduce undue stress to her uterus and supporting ligaments. This balanced state in the pelvis has been clinically shown to allow for optimal fetal positioning. The technique is known as the Webster Technique. The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported in the July/August 2002 issue an 85% success rate of babies getting into the vertex position when doctors of chiropractic used the Webster Technique. Dr. Dana Walters is a Certified Webster’s practitioner who has helped babies achieve the correct positioning for a natural delivery.
